In March 2025, the IEEE Photonics Society Malaysia Chapter (MyIPS), led by Dr Nurhafizah Burham (UiTM), donated 35 chairs to support more conducive learning environments. The contributions were made to Sekolah Agama Menengah Bestari (14 March 2025) and KAFA Integrasi Ar Raihan (24 March 2025), reflecting MyIPS’s commitment to educational empowerment and community support.
The “Kasih Rezeki” charity programme was successfully held on 26 April 2025 in conjunction with Hari Raya, through collaboration between the IEEE Photonics Society Malaysia Chapter and local community organisations in Flat Taman Kosas, Ampang. The programme shared festive joy with underprivileged groups, with around 50 recipients receiving Hari Raya goodie bags and duit raya, fostering unity, compassion, and community spirit.
The IEEE Photonics Society conducted a Virtual Reality (VR) demonstration for learning electromagnetics on 16 July 2025 at Sunway University, in partnership with the Smart Photonics Research Laboratory. Using the Merlin’s Playground VR platform, the session enabled students to visualise electromagnetic fields and light waves interactively, making abstract concepts more engaging and easier to understand.
The IEEE Photonics Society, Sunway Robotics Club, and Sunway University Smart Photonics Research Laboratory co-organised a technical talk by Dr Nor Akmar Mohd Yahya on “Optical Fiber Sensors for Environmental Monitoring in Robotics.” The session highlighted the role of optical fiber sensors in enabling smarter, safer, and more adaptive robotic systems.
Topical Meeting on Photonics (TMP) 2025 was successfully held on 5 August 2025 at Akademia Siber Teknopolis, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The biennial event brought together researchers and industry professionals to share recent advances in photonics, featuring a keynote by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Saiful Dzulkefly Zan, invited talks, and poster presentations. The meeting fostered networking, collaboration, and knowledge exchange within the photonics community.
STEM Robotic: My Robot Explorer Challenge was successfully organised by the IEEE Photonics Society Malaysia Chapter (MyIPS) on 21 August 2025 at Sekolah Kebangsaan Salak, Sepang. The programme engaged Year 4 and 5 students in hands-on robot assembly, control, and a friendly robot race, fostering interest in STEM, teamwork, and problem-solving.
The IEEE Photonics Society Malaysia Chapter co-sponsored the IEEE YESIST12 2025 Grand Finale, held on 23–24 August 2025 at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Bangi. The international competition gathered young innovators from 10 countries, with Chapter representatives serving as judges across selected tracks.
The IEEE Photonics Society Malaysia Chapter organised a STEM outreach programme, “STEM: Fun with Lights,” on 5 November 2025 at Sekolah Kebangsaan KLIA, Sepang. The hands-on activities introduced primary school students to basic concepts of light and photonics, fostering interest in STEM through experiential learning.
We host a Photonics Lecture Series (PLS) in conjunctions with International Day of Light celebration on 16th May 2023.
Prof Ho Chung gave a talk on "Advanced Optical Wireless: Ultraviolet and OAM" and Dr Mohd Rashidi Bin Salim talked about absorption spectroscopy for gas sensing applications. The event took place at UTM Skudai but members from all over Malaysia also joined online.
Prof. Ir. Dr. Sulaiman Wadi Harun from Universiti Malaya talked about what is light, its utility, and technology. He also shared his research experiences and findings related to various applications and methods, especially in the fields of fiber sensors, fiber amplifiers, and fiber lasers.
On 12th May 2021,IEEE Photonics Society in collaboration with JKEES, Pusat Kepimpinan Wanita Tun Fatimah Hashim, UKM (Prof. Dr. Dayang Anita Binti Abdul Aziz), Surau Batu Lima, Surau Sungai Buah and Surau Ar-Raudhah, (Savanna, Southville City) organised the Ramadhan Charity Program for the asnaf around Bangi and Dengkil. The families were given monetary donations and household supplies to help ease their burden as they go through the holy month of Ramadhan. Many thanks to Zaida Yasir, Hjh Syam and Ustazah Jamiliah for their help and contributions towards this program.
IEEE Photonics Society organized a photo contest with the theme “Light, a phenomenal wonder” and the contest were opened to all undergraduates and postgraduates. Three top winners and ten consolation prize winners were selected. Four category were assessed to select the winner which are picture quality, originality, artistic value and related to the theme. The first-place winner received a smart phone while the second place winner and the third place winner received a tablet and a gaming headphone, respectively. E-certificates were given to all the participants of this contest.
On 17th June 2021, IEEE Photonics Society Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia jointly organized an industrial talk entitled "Optical Fiber Deployment in Malaysia", with three experienced speakers from the telecommunication and oil and gas industry sharing their experience in handling Optical fiber-related projects. Ir. Dr. Kharina Khairi from Telekom R&D shared her knowledge on "Fault Troubleshooting in TM FTTH Network", Dr. Mohd Shahril Salleh shared on the topic "Next Technology for FTTH", and Mr Muhammad Firdaus Fadzil from Petronas shared on the topic "Optical Fiber Engineering and Deployment for Petronas Network".
From 1st August - 25th September 2021, IEEE Photonics Society in collaboration with Pusat Kepimpinan Wanita Tun Fatimah Hashim, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Kelab Amal Flat Taman Kosas organised the Kongsi Rezeki Covid19 Charity Program for the low-income families affected by Covid19. This charity program covers eight different locations which are Ampang, Kosas, Keramat, Bandar Baru Ampang, Bagan Lalang, Sri Nilai, Pandan Indah and Jelatek . The families were given monetary donations and household supplies to help ease their burden during this pandemic. Around 240 families received the donations from this program.
